Just an update... Replaced the motor assembly. What a difference! Over the course of the years, the original had gotten really loud, and I hadn't even realized it. The new unit is nearly silent. Whether changing just the impellor would have been sufficient or not, I don't know, but given the rattling around that was occurring, I suspect the shaft was pretty well worn too.
