T5HO for sure. as for how much, i recommend staying under 2pwg with T5HO. anything more than that and youre asking for trouble. i also tried the "mid-day burst" with all 4 bulbs and i had algae issues.

my experience is that 2wpg of T5HO lighting and lots of pressurized co2 is the sweet spot

Did the plants still pearl with just 2 bulbs on?

So you guys are saying more than 2wpg is too much with no Co2. I will not do Co2 because I am more into fish and dont want to interrupt the water.

I have a close tank to you 90 gallons with a 120 PowerComp and then a 4 20watt 24 inch fixture for a clean 200 watts and have had no luck with plants. I did fert but ran out, they shrink, die and the leaves get clear, I get algae green and brown, IDK what to do.

It's all a matter of what plants, what fish, how dense, and what other setup parameters you have. Every tank is different, anything posted here is a rough guide.

yeah, it's just a rough guide. nothing is ever set in stone with planted tanks. and adding co2 wont "mess" with your water. its fine for the fish :)

I always heard that Co2 will make the PH fluxuate. I just did not want to rish stressing out the fish, as I have more money in fish than the plants, but I would love a patch of the dwarf hairgrass on the bottom.

MY LFS has those little wide leave red plants, some tall and strong purple plants and that hairgrass that loves to dissapear in my tank. I have a 90g and lets say I wanted to not add Co2 what lights do you think would keep some tougher plants healthy. Or should I try Co2, what do you think.

I have a 30 inch power compact that I was told puts out 120 watts and a 30 inch light with 4 24in 20watt bulbs thats not so strong. but for a total of 200 watts.

Thanks for the feedback, too bad it took so long for me the check this thread.

it all depends on how tall the tank is as well. if you have a higher tank, up the watts per gallon. a 4 bulb HO t5 will do you fine and no Co2 is needed. remember the light has to reach the bottom of the tank. alot of fish store have light meters to help see if you are getting enough light to the right places. i know with all the money i spend at my LFS they would let me borrow theirs.

the 2 watts/g does nothing on a 50g 30" tall tank.

Thank you, I am starting to get it.

I have a mag here, nothing I order from but the HO t5 here is 4 bulbs, 48 inches, and puts out 216 watts, you think that light would hold its own.My tank is a regular 90. The showing price is 259.99.

Answered my question, reading your comments! I have just switched to a planted tank & have been using all four 54 watt T5's & just started with algae, so will only use 2 for most of the day...........Cheers
