hi i recently picked up a 75g wide for 25$ :headbang2
i want to stock it with native fish and i'm wondering what type of fish do you think i can keep in it? i was thinking a pumpkinseed or 2 and bluegill, but i'm not sure if they can live together.
i also heard from my uncle that perch cannot live in aquariums and get major deformities, as he's experienced.

also what kind of filter should i get? i've never bought a filter to add to a tank, i've only used what came with..
is there any special lighting i need to use for natives at all?

If you are talking about yellow perch they will do fine in an aquarium, what size fish are you going to keep? With a 75 you could keep several dwarf sunfish along with darters, madtom catfish, chubs and shinners.

Can't beat that price, good for you. Question is what types of fish do you want to keep? If you like pan fish you have alot of options. Seeds are a good choice, as are gills. Gills tend to be a bit more feisty, and one usually ends up as dominant. Mine lives with a foot long midas and swims around like he owns the tank. Rockbass get quite a personality as they age/grow, but are a little drab. Green sunfish are entertaining and keep some decient coloration. They also have a predatory appearance that is hard to beat on a small fish. Yellow perch are fine in a large tank buy to me are a little boring. So tell us what you are looking for in color, attiude, etc... and we can help narrow it down for you.

yeah u can keep perch but they are boring they mostly sit on the bottom. if ur tank is in the basement and it keeps a low temp you can try trout. i've had descent luck with them. i've kept pickeral, sunfish, bluegill, perch, and bullhead catfish in a 150 before and they did fine. and a snapping turtle temporarily but he was 2 inches in length at the time. once they hit 4-5 inches they get nasty. I wouldn't recommend trout. They get massive, that is if they even survive without a chiller...

I would do some smaller sunfish species and some small cats. Also, maybe a school of some nice minnows, maybe southern redbelly dace if you can find them. They are one of my favorites that we often catch in my area.

Pan fish will work in a 75. I had a Yellow Perch in an 80L and he turned out to be an awesome fish. He was housed w/some SA's and lived for years. He would swim constantly, hammer food (feeders, FD Krill, and worms) As for them just sittiing on the bottom, it is the same old story. Different fish have dif. personalities. Some maybe active, while others just lounge. A 75 is a nice GO for a pickerel or LMB.

The reason why the perch was lay on bottom is because they need in groups. You should try Dollars or Longear sunfish they are so pretty to look at. Or you can try mud sunfish which look different from the rest of sunfish family. You can even keep Redfin or Grass Pickerel in 75gal permament.

coloration really isn't an issue and all fish mentioned are ones i thought of keeping...
i would like to keep maybe 2 or 3 perch now that i see i can, and possibly 1 or 2 pumpkin seeds. i've never heard of a green sunfish, where are they located?
wouldn't rock bass be aggressive? i know they tent to take over parts of lakes ect...

I wouldn't recommend yellow perch. They can get 14-16"-even in an aquarium.
