As long as the roots stay out of the plates with the aid of your batting your should be good to go.
It would also increase the usefulness of the UGF in my opinion. The batting would catch the big chunks which would be cleaned with a siphon hose much easier and the batting would hold the small bits so it could be broken down by the plants and act as a bit of biological filtration in itself.
Looks like a good idea. I've gotten away from using UGF's since my plants are plastic anymore.
