75g Stocking sugg(around an oscar)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oscars grow quickly and with a 75 gallon tank you can possibly expect your 'runts' to start putting on size at a rate of 1" per month. You really can have tankmates for a short period of time since you will have a big fish on your hands in a year. I recommend just the one Oscar and a single featherfin cat for clean up.

I have a single bumblebee oscar going on 10" and a 4.5" L114 pleco in a 72g bow with an AC110 and Eheim 2217. Its tough to keep up with the constant mess this fish can make so I have an idea of what you would be realistically facing....

The Oscar will be moved in to my 125g if there isn't a 200g fast enough. The 75g is effectively a grow out tank for it, I told her she can move it when it's too big. Evidently she also said she has a teacher that has a similar size tank setup in a classroom that she might want to donate it to "but she hasn't decided yet."

This is why I'm stocking others as well. As of tonight before lights out she was quite adamant on a JD + a pair of some form of cryptoheros.

Interested to see what you end up with I've been wanting crypto heros for some time. Currently have a honduran red point but these are nice as well.

Well you know kids. The only thing she's certain on is a JD. Cryptos, feather fins, and eb acara have been thrown around a lot.

Trying to explain it's a long term plan, which she gets to an extent, but it's hard for her to get over her love of colors and appreciation of how they grow from 1" to 10"

Consider Hypsophrys nicaraguensis. Certainly a much different shape and color than current fish...

She ended up going with an albino senegal bichir, jack dempsey, and 3 striped raphaels. Fell in love so fast with the bichir, the moment one of the oscars made a pass at it, she determined they were going back to the middle school with her next week to be housed in her teachers tank. In the meantime I've cut some spare pvc to give him more places to hide. I'll grab some pics and post them after she finishes feeding them.
