770 Gallon Monster Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Glad to hear you are gettn stoked to put in some tropicals :) Like you said...since you put all this time and $ into setting up such a nice tank you might as well put what you desire in it. Thats what we work for right...?

You'll like the Ranco. The only thing I wish it had was a lighted display. With your open stand it should be easy to read though.

I really like Oscars too. I had 2 tiger oscars similar to yours, but the tank they were in broke, so I had to get rid of them. They were about 9 inches. I finally got a new 180 to replace the 210 that broke. I got a couple more little ones for the new tank. I just have to see if they can get along with a jag and red devil which I know isn't likely. I'll have to decide at some point which fish I like the best. With all that room I'd recommend a nice Midas. That's probably the nicest looking cichlid in my opinion. You have enough room that you shouldn't have to worry about a midas giving any beat downs. The one I had I had to give up, because it was the biggest jerk of a fish I've owned.

Yeah I really like the way peacock bass look, but when I think about having a 3 to 4 foot fish in an aquarium it just seems rediculous. Even though I plan on getting a lot bigger tank in the future I can't imagine keeping anything bigger than a jag or oscar. I'm glad the heaters are working out.

If you really like peacock bass and dont want one thats 36"+ stick to mono's, orino's and kelberi's. Those are some that are pretty easy to find and will max out at around 24" give or take a few inches depending on care.

^^^ glad to hear Alex, there is no turning back now so your gonna have to make it work :)

LOL- It's only money, right?

Here is a low tech way to get rid of your humidity problem. http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc...splay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
My cousin used to use something like this in his room to catch the humidity.

Very interesting. I'll have to try one of these out. Thanks for the tip!

Lookin gud, love the pic of the old redhooks :naughty:

haha- that's right...you still have them, or did your bruisers take them out?

A dehumidifier shouldn't use that much electricity. I always have one set up in my basements to keep them from getting musty. The new ones are programable to only kick on at certain humidity levels and will shut off once they lower it a certain amount. An exhaust fan might be another option but I don't know if one would use any less electricity than a dehumidifier.

The dehumidifiers I was looking at draw between 500 and 700 watts. Maybe there are smaller units that use less electricity, but I would think that I would need a fairly decent sized unit if I was to keep the room entirely sealed. Right now I'm actually just leaving a window cracked open so that I have some air flow and it actually seems to be enough to keep the humidity down. But by doing this, I'm letting cold air into the room which means that my heaters have to work harder. Damned if I do, damned if I don't. I think running a fan would most definitely be cheaper to run than a dehumidifier, but then I'm drawing cold air into the room...not sure which would end up being cheaper after you take that into consideration.

Yup, I never intended to keep goldfish, that's for sure.

I"m definitely looking forward to getting the controller. I might mount the controller outside of the stand on the wall so that it easy to see/read. I actually have plans to make some removeable panels to skin the stand. I'll post pix once I have that done...if it turns out how I'm envisioning it, it should look pretty cool. I'll be stretching vinyl across some frames that I'm going to attach to the stand with either magnets or industrial strength velcro...should looke pretty dope and help hold some heat in as well.

Busted tank? That sucks. I like Midas, but every large one I've ever seen was a total aggro psychopath. I really hope I never have to try to net a fish out of this tank, so I'll probably stay away from the super aggressive species. I personally prefer to have more of a community setup where everyone gets along. I know, not very MFK of me, but I'm not hard core MFK like that. If I was a true MFKer, I would already have a Pima, a few RTCs, and a bumblebee grouper. :duh:

I know this pic looks the same as every other I've posted, but here's one I took a few minutes ago:

Alex, just a thought but ever thought of enclosing the stand to compress moisture leak and better more effeciently control the humidity ?? If the stand was enclosed therefore shrinking the area of leakage that little tub or moisture absorbant might not be such a bad idea..... just a thought bro

I don't know what chemical is in the bucket, but you could probably "Re-dehydrate" it after it absorbs the moisture of the room When you get your tank stand enclosed and some sort of (relatively) tight fitting lid, something as simple as those dehydration buckets might really do the trick. But if you have to continually replace them, that would be an additional cost to be calculated.

Looking Great!! Super excited to see what you decide to stock it with. Whatever it is, I'm sure it will be very happy and healthy fish and not just a prisoner who constantly paces back and forth in it's (barely large enough) cell.

Goodluck!

It also looks like you just have towels over you sump for lids...? I had my glass guy come over and take measurements of my sump top and where my pipes are. He made some awesome lids that keep the moisture and HEAT in :)

Skinning the stand is in the works. I'm going to make removeable panels and line the inside with polystyrene rigid insulation. Should keep the heat in pretty well. I also plan to insulate the back of the tank and the sump. Good lookin out.

Walmart also carries these cheaper.

I've found that keeping the window very slightly cracked creates enough air flow that humidity stays down. But I'm still going to look into those buckets. I also found another product that looks promising: http://evadry.reachlocal.com/?scid=1277528&kw=8183758&pub_cr_id=7189349689. It has great reviews on amazon.com.

In regards to stock, I'm pretty set on a school of Black Bar Silver Dollars, but I'm not sure what else. I like fish with some personality, so I'm actually considering a giant red tail gourami.

Good eye. I have 3/8" acrylic lids for the sump, so I'm probably just going to cut them up to fit around the pipe...just haven't gotten around to it. I know glass is better because it doesn't warp, but since I already have the lids I'll probably just stick with the acrylic.

Absolutely AWESOME!!!

Thanks!
