8 discus in a 55?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
55's are real narrow, I would prefer to have something with some width to it for any number of discus, especialy if you plan to plant it. With an expensive showpiece fish like discus, it pays to also have a showpiece tank to display them in.

also, keeping plants can be a challange of its own...... take your time and get a tank that fits the stock you want...try not to force the stock you want into a tank that isn't quite right.

whatever you decide, have fun and good luck

the water quality shouldnt be much of a problem as long as i dont over feed them etc :naughty:

You need to be careful as discus are one of the few fish that are easy to under feed. Discus are easily stunted and under feeding is on of the ways to do it. Discus typically need to feed 3 meals a day.

This is excellent advise!

it's best to grow your fish out in a bare tank. Discus can be lazy or maybe they are just plain stupid that they can't find the food offered to them. Surplus food will get stuck in the planst which will at best result in algae and at worst the rotting food will make the tankwater uninhabitable. Adult fish are easy to keep in a planted tank, babies are not since they need to be fed several times a day and a bare tank is just easier to keep clean. A 50gallon tank is too small for eight fish. You can grow them to half their adult size but then you will need to put them in a bigger tank.
I perform daily 50-80% water changes in my discus tanks. This aids fast growth

that tank is fine for juvies but not for long. I think the problem is a fully planted tank with juvies. they need to be fed 5 or 6 times a day. you are going to have problems cleaning the left over food and your plants are not going to like major water changes every day. if you must have a planted tank you would be better off with 4 or 5 near adult discus. I don't care for tanks of this size for anything but small fish. it's too narrow and does'nt allow for much aqua scaping. better off with a 75 gal.
