Going with the filter idea:

Cut the dividers out. Pump water to one side of it, heavily plant it and make a river out of it. The other end would exit to your tank. Might make a killer cool looking nitrate filter.

The arrow frog idea is pretty cool. Although a little more expensive than the beta...

apparently the notches in the divider are very wide so small fish can swim right through guy used it to raise african fry and corydoras in it and they could swim the whole length

Maybe I am crazy but that would be really cool to make every one of the compartments into a different biotope or just a whole different design....Then have small comm. fish that can swim into any part they want. I think that would look cool.
