i have a pair of reds and i also am looking for a large female for my red in my community. its been a chore. anyways i have a black background on the community but i have tan/natural gravel. looks completely different than yours.

^^^^ I can't believe yours plays well with others, Ever since I got him, he has been a killer. My mistake was buying him and a male grammode and having them divided in the tank. I think the constant displaying made him a much more aggressive fish. IMO if you want to acclimate fish to each other it is best to just throw them in together with no dividers and let them settle out the pecking order. But who knows for sure, they are all so different. I have been trying to find him a female for almost 6months now, It has been really hard. I need to try the lighter substrate, its just not being lazy and actually removing the sand that is in there now.
i think that community works cause there all killers in there. my female black nasty is the smallest and checks everyone in there. i have a few grammodes myself and they are a pissed off cichlid. one of my favs. removing sand is quite easy. it syphons right out.
O ya, grammodes are mean little SOB's as well. The minute I would remove the divider to try to acclimate them to each other, they would go at it. It was a stalemate in the beginning but as the slow growth of the grammode became a factor the istlanum just got to large and almost killed him, so I had to sale the grammode and after that he decided he would let nothing live with him.
After watching this video again http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?481592-Red-and-green&highlight=red+istlanum I am pretty certain that he is a Green Istlanum. Which is fine with me, the more I look at them the more I like the green variety even more.
