8 year anniversary today

For me the term is fitting. I spent a number of years in recovery either with AA meetings or inpatient programs. Some people can quit without help, which IMO means they perhaps had a drinking problem/realized alcohol was an issue for them, but were not full on alcoholics.

For me, I definitely was a alcoholic. If I had one drink then I didn't stop until I emptied the fifth, and then I had to have more on hand or I wouldn't feel I had enough. I was a textbook alcoholic for sure. Only difference today is I consider myself a recovering alcoholic because for people like me, I could be right back where I was if I were to only have that first drink. So even 20 yrs down the road I will still call myself a recovering alcoholic, just because my problem with it will never be "cured". The day I feel I am no longer an alcoholic is the day I feel I am stepping back towards that lifestyle again which I do not want to happen.
Yeah, I do realize some people have problems...more power to them(you). I even would have thought I'd be one. I really drank alot from 1988-2001(2002 was lighter when I quit). The first half of that time, I hammered Whiskey then went to wine coolers then down to beer. So, maybe that was a way of me slowly withdrawing from it. The last night a buddy of mine and me polished off a 12 or 24pk that night.

Must have been a good night if you cant remember lol

Stopped drinking when i had my 1st kid. Now its just a beer every now and then.

The smokes are a whole other story...just cant do it smh

Congrats Steve, that's a great accomplishment, real will power for both the smokes and drinks.

I haven't smoked a cigarette for 5 years, when I switched over to vaping -- feel tons better (and have reduced nicotine level down to 3mg, the lowest next to 0mg) since making the switch: better cardio, way better sense of smell, plus no more or even less coughing than non-smokers. That said I would like to get off vaping some days, while better than smoking it's certainly not health risk free. Unfortunately I don't yet have your will power level in this regard.

Congrats! That’s a big accomplishment! And so much money saved! Haha

My husband quit smoking within the first month we started dating(over 11yrs ago) He wasn’t too hooked on it and was able to go cold turkey and not touch one since. Chewing was a little harder for him to quit, but he did it for his health and because he knew I didn’t like it.
I’m so proud of him and know that it wasn’t an easy thing to do. He means so much to me and our family we want to keep him healthy as possible:)

Hats off to all of you that have cut smoking and drinking out of your lives!

Any suggestions as to what I could do other than smoke? Lolol sounds stupid... but I smoke mainly because I constantly havto be moving/doing something... if I become bored or have nothing to do I smoke constantly... with I had something to substitute with... worst is at work during slow periods

Chew gum. My dad has a toothpick in his mouth(even 20 years later(not the same one)).

Congrats to everyone who has the willpower to quit their negative habits whatever they are.
I've given up a few things over the years but cigarettes are the final vice. I'm in my 40s now and have a kid so it's probably time to think seriously about kicking them.
