From what i heard, you cant buy them off apple.com. they arent going to sell the ones with no contracts untill later in the year. Also, currently you can only get them at a apple store or a ATT store. They make you activate them at the store.

i just google the price of the 3g iphone without contract, 8gb 599 and 16bg 699. so its 200 more compared to the older models, its freaking rip off man
They do not make you activate them in the store. ATT simply sold me the phone in the box and said go home, plug it into the computer, and follow directions. You go through the activation yourself and there is NOTHING done in the store other than paying for it and getting a receipt.
I have no clue what is up with the new 3g stuff though, other than I would love to sell my 1st gen 8gig for $350 as well haha.

Its sold for 350 no problem. I should have held out one more day. Someone just offered me 400 + shipping.
