8'x4'x2' for Coldwater Oddballs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We are supposed to start construction soon - but I am still waiting on more input on the whole bottom piece of acrylic. According to the calculator if we use 1" for everything else it will be over built. Why cant we have a 1/8" bottom that has 1" plywood underneath with 2x4 ribs underneath?

It might work, but I'd check the wood part with someone who has built a plywood aquarium in order to make sure that it will be strong enough.

Which Calc are you using? As for bottom thickness I would not skimp on it. If you have to move the tank or if there are imperfections with the wood you may be opening yourself up to problems. When I checked the thickness recommendations via my calc it recommends .791 for side walls on a supported tank (top piece) and 1.186 for an unsupported wall. IMO, if you build that tank with a top piece welded in I would say 3/4 is quite fine and will work well at 2 feet tall.

Hey guys - most recent update and I hope we can start getting some more activity on this thread.

I have decided that it will be easier, and more cost effective to just do a plywood tank.

So...I know there are lots of people who have done this out there. Tell me where I start!

Its a plywood!

What all will I need to build this as a plywood tank.

I hope to get some better replies with this, as I know there are a lot of plywood builds on the site. Worse comes to worst I will just start another thread but heres hoping we can gets some responses on here.

Decided to go plywood due to cost, but also saw a super clean build on another site. I think I can do that.

You are leaving it wide open for us.. which is probably why you aren't getting many responses. There are a million things people could cover. Are you wanting advice on plywood types, seams, coating, plumbing, stand, hood, etc.... ? There are some very beautiful builds posted here. I think you'd be best served to ask a question on something specific and i am sure we will help get the ball rolling for you.
