So i think it is time for me to build a outdoor above ground tank/pond. This will be the thread i keep updated about progress and with pics etc,

Basic idea so far involves being well insulated for winter, viewing window, easy to use lids and easy to drain and move if we need to move house.

Size i am aiming for is actually in Metric as i am from Australia LxWxH will be 2400x1800x1200mm which is close enough to 8x6x4ft for u imperial people. It will be on a steel stand still deciding on height wont be very high maybe 2ft/600mm off the ground

This is in very early stages and i have only just begun scribbling down some designs but will keep this updated on progress!

The beginning..... this is the steel frame idea at this point in time

Good stuff! I really like the idea of the steel frame with a large glass window and tank/stand structure all in one. 600 high stand + 1200 high tank is going to be fairly awkward to get into though, not to mention the cost of the glass for a 1200 deep tank!

As for being easy to move if you shift house, I presume you mean with a hi-ab or forklift?! :D

the glass is only guna be 2.5ft or 760mm will cost me around $600 for the panel, u can see in my drawing of the "Front" section the beam across the bottom of the window below that will be ply like the other sides, my guess of the weight empty is around 400kg

Doh, I must have missed that. Looking forward to seeing how it goes, having 1.5' of tank depth below the bottom of the window is a fair bit tho, I take it you're not really into bottom dwellers? For my money I'd only go 3' deep and stretch to 19mm glass so you could have the window full height.

well its guna home my RTC, i might just make the glass 3' anyway so its only 1 ft of non viewing still undecided, just getting some stuff done in 3d software and doing some calcs on weight and materials needed to withstand flex etc
