9.5" Oscar.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That could be I have had this guy in a 220 for 90% of his life, there wasa bout 4 months where he lived in a 55 gallon when I had to repair the stand on the 220. I had 2 mini cycles that lasted about 4 to 7 days, once from unclean sump and once form installing a drip system.

While its not perfect I did try very hard to take care of him and provide him a happy home, and he is still to this day my favorite fish, even above my beloved bala's.

I feel for you. I have a Midas that is 10" that is almost 2 yrs old that does not seem to grow (except for around, he's chubby). I raised him in a 120g tank with plenty of high quality foods, regular water changes, and plenty of advice that I found here on MFK. I have accepted that he is a bit of a runt but I am still keeping him. Though I wonder when he moves into his permanent home (210g) if he might have a growth spurt. I can only hope!

I think mine is going through a growth spurt he went from like a 5g at petsmart to my 150g, and has been growing like crazy within a few weeks that Ive had him/ her.

He should be growing quickly, thats the Oscar way. As long as you feed them a well balanced diet, and they have fresh clean water their whole lives then they grow like weeds.

I purchased mine at 1.5" in December and he is about 6.5-7.5". You honestly shouldn't blame yourself for the fish not growing huge. If you know that you have taken care of him how he was supposed to be cared for and fed him properly, then theres not much else you can do. Just like humans, fish can have different DNA, my brother is 26yrs old and only 5'9" where as I am 20 yrs old and am 6'1" then my youngest brother is 12yrs old and is 5'10" already(we all have the same parents for any of you wise guys :banhim:). So it just depends, you can have gotten an Oscar that was strongly inbred and has issues and might never get larger than 10". My only advice is to continue to care for him as best as you can and just watch and see how large he grows.

So you use you and your brothers as an example of differences in size and then say that the reason for it with the oscar iis because its "strongly inbred"??!!

:grinno:

nofored it sounds like you've cared for it well, IMO its either just a smaller fish or may have been stunted before you got it. Either way if its happy and healthy in your tank then its all good.
