The so-called "false" green terror is the one that is actually available. Everyone refers to them as green terrors though. Its the common name, so saying there is a "true" and "false" GT is pretty dumb I think.

There are two color variants of it, called the gold and silver saum. The gold one has orange edged fins, the silver has white edged fins.

M_M your GT is very nice. How old is he? Don't you have some larger ones like 13"?

I did have some larger ones that I actually caught when I lived in Hawaii. They tended to not transition to tank life very well, so I re-released them after a short stint. One day I'm going to go back and catch some and take them with me back to the mainland. There are a few of them that I shipped to Ohio I think as fry a couple years ago. Wonder how big they are now...

As for the true/false nonsense I actually own both, and this male gold saum bred with two "true" GT females before.

Not a good photo but you can see the difference, they're two different species but are closely related.

I like the gold saum but the grammodes is 10 times better:D very nice and healthy CICHLIDS

Very nice GT, good job taking care of him :-)
I keep reading about grammodes and have never looked them up. It just may be time I go do a Google search on them. They certainly seem popular for some reason.

They are considered " Mini Dovii's".

i have heard this term refering to Grammodes, never anything else

Good looking guy modest, if you ever go back to hawaii i'll pay you for a couple of those monster saums.

I had a lot of interest in the large gold saums but I could never get them to eat once in a tank or holding pond. They were always very jumpy and would tend to de-scale themselves trying to leap out (lost one that way). I tried it with three different large males (12-13") then just resorted to keeping some of their fry at 2-3". I have no idea what they were eating in the wild, probably crayfish and mosquito fish mainly.

There are literally thousands of them, ripe for the netting. ;)

I believe the reason grammodes are called "mini dovii" is due to the similar body shape. I'd take a grammodes over dovii any day, better color and smaller to boot!
