Im going into my 3rd week of cycling my tank. the tank is being cycled with a 3 inch Jack Dempsey and a 4 inch Red Devil. I just became aware of the compatability issues associated with the red devil but the red devil and the jd actually get along great so far, no trouble at all. Also, i didnt really learn the benefits of fishless cycling till after everything was going up so... here i am. I noticed about last week that my ammonia lvls were going up rapidly, so I did about a 50% water change and things leveled out. Im going into my 3rd week, im having to do 40-60% water changes every 2 days so the ammonia lvls stay safe. my problem is im not seeing a rise in the nitrites. Nitrites are currently at 0.3ppm atm. It is my understanding that im suppose to see a spike in nitrites and ammonia, then they go down to nothing and i start seeing nitrates. Is this correct? Im wanting to know if its normal for the nitrites to take this long to go up and also if this amount every 2 days for a water change is normal for this situation. Will my tank ever cycle at this rate? Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!

my nearest petsmart is about 60 miles away

you can order it online, if your cycling seems to be getting now where. I would think you'd be farther along by now, atleast to the point your ammonia levels stay safe without frequent water changes.

If you know anyone with a tank that you trust, you can put some of their filter media in your filter to give it a jump start.

I wouldn't get any from a pet shop

You are experiencing the “joys” of cycling a tank with fish, as opposed to fishless.
Sounds about right.
Ammonia is being converted to Nitrite, maybe not as fast as you would like.
All you can do is water changes and ride out the process.
Keep a check on your water and change it when needed.
As mentioned, some media from an established tank would be a big help, but I think if some was available to you, you would have already used it.
An extra dose of Prime, or something like it, will help detox the ammonia and nitrite for less harm to your fish.
Never tried the “Instant Cycle”, bacteria in a bottle, so really can not say whether it would help you any.
Good luck

well, as long as im on the right track i guess its ok. i was kindof hoping for a quick fix lol...guess thats out. also, i dont know anyone with a tank or like you said, i would have already taken that route. oh well...maybe things will level out shortly. thnx for the reply.

get stability to help speed it up, sounds like your in the thick of it right now, keep the water changes every 2-3 days if you want to limit stress on your fish as well
