90 gallon growout project journal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo

Your fish are most likely mines "nephews and or nieces." I'm pretty sure Jeff Rapps had a pair from the one wild caught group he got several months ago, of which my fish was a part of, to spawn and their offspring is the brood your fish are from. That's assuming his shipment of wild caughts were all from the same spawn, which nobody can truly know. We'll stick with "cousins" :)

We should compare once every month or two
Sure thing bro I think mine are a tad bit bigger right now but I have a lot more growouts in with them. I change50-70% water one a week and feed them variety of food. They ate a lot more with my water heated but i dropped it down to 77-78 and they are a lot less hungry now

ive got the temp to 82 have been doing daily water changes since I've got them in the 90 gallon to keep the tank in a good healthy cycle until it fully cycles and to keep any ammonia down. After the tank fully cycles i'll be doing water changes every other day or so. They all seem extremely happy so hope they continue that way moving forward.

Yes they seem very happy and I like the center piece driftwood so that means they have a lot of space to swim around it

I unfortunately had to split up that center piece of driftwood. It was two pieces stacked on top of each other so I split them to each side or the tank to provide more hiding places for all the fish. I have quite a lot in the tank right now which I basically why I'll be doing dealt wager changes for the most part. I'll post a video tomorrow of the tank. It's quite busy right now haha. Fish still seem more than happy though. I have cryptohero sajicas in there, vieja melanura, geophagus winemilleri, gymnogeophagus balzanii, and the true parrots. Was wanting to add a few vieja maculicauda black belts in the tank but think it'll get much too crowded. All fish are very small still so they have plenty of space to grow but the vieja will grow quite rapidly. Any idea on the growth rate of the true parrots?

I think your stock is fine right now I wouldn't add anymore fish. Well my parrots came in like at .5" in September 1st and right now are close to 2" idk if that helps

I will be growing out some 1" central and south Americans in a 90 gallon and thought it'd be cool to start a little journal on their progress throughout the years to come.

Stock list :
F1Hoplarchus psittacus "True Parrot Cichlid"
‎F1 Vieja melanura
F1 Vieja maculicauda
F1 Geophagus winemilleri
F1Gymnogeophagus balzani Belle Union Uruguay
F1 Amatitlania sajica

All the vieja along with possibly the Amatitlania sajica will be placed in a 300 plus gallon tank and the geos, true parrots and gymnogeophagus balzanii will be placed in their own 180 gallon acrylic corner tank.

I'm an avid water changer, changing water basically everyday 50 to 75 percent of it to keep everything very healthy and also since I powerfeed these fish to give them the optimal growth and potential of best color. I have them feeding on a mixture of southern delight power feed pellets and southern delight veggie krill along with a little nls small pellet here and there for the fish that aren't quite big enough for the other crushed up southern delight pellets.. All these fish eat like constant pigs and feed them about 4 times a day but not too much to prevent any bloat from happening. The true parrots seem to be the most furious eaters of them all.

These fish will be moved to their bigger tanks within a year from now, especially the vieja since they grow so rapidly.

The tank is currently being ran on a fluval 306 canister filter and emperor 400 hob filter with lots of biological filter media.

Here are some pics of the tank and fish. I'll be moving the driftwood to create some more hiding places instead of having one veteran piece for the time being. I'll have to remove these pieces and add smaller pieces in the near future so I can provide more space for the fish to grow. Thanks for looking and enjoy.

Still need to get pics of maculicauda and balzanii. Will post some soon
