90 gallon question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sometimes they do! Good luck with your tank but you may decide even if they don't get along to add a second tank, then a third, then a fourth, then you convince your wife to let you have the whole basement.

If that's salt and calcium build up I had great luck getting off with vinegar. High acidity stuff works best I used red wine vinegar, highest acid content in the store. You can also scrape it GENTLY with a razor. Try to keep the direction the same and make sure to keep it flat. Have fun! its quite a chore.

Also petco is running the dollar per gallon sale right now so 55 gals are $55. I bought two yesterday.

I'm going to have to go grab that 55 new . Down the road would the 55 be ok for the gt and fm?

GT is South American, Firemouth is Central American. I personally would not mix them. Also, the Firemouth would do better in a group with other Firemouths. Good luck.

A 55 is ok for an adult male GT alone in some cases and certainly will be fine for a long while because of the slow growth rate. I have a male, he grows very slow and isn't a big eater. He's about 6" in there alone and I'll be moving him to a bigger tank sometime before the end of this year just so he can swim around more. Once they hit a certain size and start to get some bulk they can really make the tank look kind of small. My suggestion is pick up the 55 because its so darn cheap and grow him in there until you feel like he's ready for more space. Absolute worst case if he lives there for life it would be cramped but I wouldn't say cruel, unlike keeping an Oscar or Midas in a 55.

On the firemouth, I don't think it would be successful long term there's just not a ton of territory to claim in a 55 gallon. Ideal size for single male GT IMO is about a 75 once their fully grown, again this takes quite some time. A female would be fine in there for life, probably even with a small tank mate or two like a blue acara or similar, although I think the FM could maybe still be a problem with her. A female could also live in there with a group of small fast dithers like giant danios, buenos aires tetras, or something along those lines. It's always case by case with tank mates as my male will tolerate none!

Thanks for the input. Two more questions since they are young we have added more caves however as they get bigger is it better to have alot more open space and just a few pieces of drift wood. Also talking with my son he really likes the look of the EbJd and gt together. We spoke with a guy at the lfs who has a 110 that wold like the normal jd since his tank just cycled? I bought the 55 but am liking the idea of doing just a fm tank.
