90 gallon stocking help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
6 angelicus loaches
3-4 rams/apistos/kribensis
2-3 firemouths
3-4 keyholes
1 Siamese algae eater
10-15 schooling tetras (still don't know what kind, but with the removal of the severums, would harlequin rasbora now work?)

I think the problem with this mix is that when the firemouths breed, their aggression gets ramped up, and the trouble begins. In my opinion, you could use the stock listed above, remove the 2-3 firemouths, and replace them with 1 severum. I have a 4" gold severum, 4" blood parrot, 5 x red serpea tetras, bn pleco, and a cory in a 38 gallon tank and have no aggression problems. I find breeding to be the catalyst for aggression, so as long as you have a single severum you should be fine.

Also, you said earlier you had some trouble keeping neons alive, so I wanted to add that I find rams to be very delicate. They are the only fish I've found that I cannot keep alive. It's too bad, because I really like them, but I no longer buy them because the never last more than 3 months for me. Best of luck to you.

Well I am going to get either rams, kribensis or apistogrammas. The girlfriend wants "her" fish and she wants tiny colorful ones. I personally am leaning towards kribs. I have heard they are hardier than rams. Haven't heard much about apistos in comparison to rams or kribs as far as how hardy they are.

And the only things I have heard about severum aggression is when they are 6"+. I have a friend who used to raise severums and terrors before he downgraded and he says the only severum he had out of the 20+ he raised, he only had two that were openly aggressive with other fish and only after they hit about 6 or 7 inches.

Neon tetras have been so inbred that they have become super fragile. And rummy nose have always been pretty fragile. Plus I figured out that I was having small ammonia spikes from each tetra dying, beginning with the ones that died during my ich treatment (which killed off a decent portion of the good bacteria in the tank). Because they are currently in a small 20 gallon tank, even small water parameter changes can cause big problems, which is one of the reasons I am very much looking forward to this 90 gallon tank being ready for fish. And I learned my lesson to use salt and heat the next time instead of chemicals.

I kept and bred kribs, they were hardy.I agree firmouth would harrass any smaller fish.search laetacara, diadema also.I always wanted to try dwarf rainbowfish.I think your loaches will eat eggs if any fish pair.I would stick to 5 small cichlids for a 90,plus your school and bottom crew

Small cichlids as in just kribs or just singles?

I really like kribs more than rams too. :)

Certain species of the laetacara are very nice. Not a fan of the diademas though.

As for the loaches, I plan on buying a divider for the tank so I can basically seal off 1/3 of the tank whenever someone breeds. Would that remove the need for just 5 small fish? Cause I would really like to have at least 2 bigger fish: singles of either festivum (my personal favorite of the list), keyhole or blue acara.

Took my girlfriend to the LFS today and she got to see the rams and kribs first hand. They are the more common and duller species than the ones she has seen in pictures on the Internet. So the rams idea is gone. This is getting old. LOL

I picked up 1 tiny 1.5" blue acara that was with several other, much larger blue acara. She/He is very colorful and took to the aquarium like a champ about an hour ago. Here is my new stock list for the 90 gallon tank.

1 blue acara
1 keyhole cichlid
1 green severum
1 festivum
6 angelicus loaches
1 Siamese algae eater

I am wondering if I could successfully breed any of the 4 cichlids without removing any of the other fish. I am planning on getting a divider for the tank that would separate breeding pairs from their tankmates. I would have 1-3 of the whichever is breeding cichlid species. Which of them is the calmest and least aggressive breeders? My preference is severums, but any of them would be fun. :)
