Sup friends,
I have a 90 gal with a roughly 6-7" O, a 6" pleco, JD FM Con and polypterus senegalus.
In the tank there is no real amount of aggression, with the O and JD being the most passive(FM and Con go at it the most). The O has clearly established dominance but almost never chases any fish. At most he'll chase one half way around the tank every now and again..

My problem is that the fish (excluding the O) are still scared of people...They never come to the surface for food and always wait for it to sink to the bottom 1/4 of the tank. I'm a little frustrated since I've had the JD, con and FM for a year...The FM is the only one that will venture half way up the tank to get food.

I originally wanted 2 large fish that would eat other fish but deided to settle for a smaller JD and the other 2. Now im starting to want to go back to my original idea of just getting 2 larger predatory fish with the poly and pleco...

Do you guys have any explantion as to why my fish act like that and what would be some of my options for another predatory fish should i get rid of the 3 other fish??

Thanks, CJ

IMO tanks overstocked after the Oscar and One other fish purely due to bio load, and probably room. Most oscars I've seen/heard of are not shy at all and are one of the best wet pets out there. Therefore I wonder why yours is, what are the water params, water change schedule, temperature? Also a pic of the tank will help determine a solution.

I wouldnt say its overstocked at this point, maybe in a year but still...

Ways to overcome skiddishness are: lower temps 72-75, dont blind them with lite, low nitrates and if the tank is in a secluded area that doesnt help, if the fish encounter people on a regular basis like in a hallway then they become accustumed to people.

Another good method is approaching the tank only to feed so they relate ur face to food and also CERTAIN colors make fish freak out!

Hope that helps and im sure you didnt post this to be criticized about ur tank, weekly water changes are neccesary!

I re read it, and he wants his fish to be less shy, excluding the Oscar, missed that part. I think it's just How those species are. I have fire mouths and a convict right now, and the fire mouths are not that shy, but not personable, convict hides when I come by. Never had a jd but I don't think they are a traditional wet pet.

I would also say that that tank is too small for those fish. What kind of filter do you have on it and what is your water change regime.

Yea its cool. Its a hefty combo of fish and personally i like to stick w/ one species of fish per tank well i kinda have too anyway! I just prefer to see my fish interact as a group and not outcast anyone!

Either way, op the more time u spend infront of ur fish the better as well. Just throw a treat in everytime for the first week or so and they will become faithful troopers!

Ya probassfisher010 u got it now. Everyone in there is shy EXCLUDING the Oscar who loves me or at least loves the hand that feeds him haha. I have a single T5 48" bulb running on the tank now and the temp is high 70's-80.
The tank is in my basement so people arent passing it every hour but people do go down there a few times a day.

Ive had the fish for almost a year and theyre acting like when i first bought them and its getting kind of annoying...
Can u guys suggest any other suitable tankmates for my O?

Is it in a place where there are shadows passing by the tank?

Fish in a low traffic area are harder to socialize to begin with, but I've also noticed that they don't like shadows passing over a tank. I have one tank in my living room that gets direct sunlight in the afternoon which causes a shadow when I walk in, and they all go crazy.
