So, I don't have much experience with CA/SA but I am considering setting my 90 up with one or more specimens and would like some input for what could go in it for life. Filtration would most likely be 1-2 hobs and two xp3 cans. I also have power heads available.
Thanks in advance for your replies

Edit: sorry the tank dimensions are 48x18x24

If it was me, I'd use it for a Wet Pet (I.e. Midas, Red Devil, Trimac, Flowerhorn, etc). It all depends on whether or not you want to house several smaller fish or 1 large specimen.

Color is important for this tank. I don't care if it's a small group or a single but I need very interactive and would really like a catfish or group of cats but that might be a fantasy dream

For color I'd recommend some electric blue acara

For colour you could try Amatitlania nanolutea, with some swordtails and hoplo catfish.
Or thorichthys species as a group or pair

I agree with dan518, I go by the 10 gallons per inch of adult cichlid rule (that does "not" mean only one individual, so with my rule nothing over 9" in a 90 gallon.
And the nanolueus would fit nicely, they are not hard on plants, and also give you great color.

panamense or sajica would also work

although I believe sajica are a little harder on plants

I went with a bigger fish in a 90 gallon and was disappointed. It's really is kind of like keeping a prisoner. My midas are much happier in their 300. Smaller fish = a lot more movement and you can get more of them. Crinum Calamistratum is my favorite hardy plant and I recommend them to anyone aquascaping. They kind of look like palm trees when they get big. If you begin with plants it might be possible to get a colony of ruby red shrimp started. They become quite prolific. Once you add fish if they've had enough time to get acquainted with your tanks hiding spots they might out breed their appetites.
