Thanks for the ideas everyone, now I have a starting point for my research.

Still open to additional input though!

Nothing that gets past 10" TL IMO. A big fish is not suited for a 4' tank.
But there are plenty of fun and colorful cichlids to pick from. Two I like are h. Deppii and c. Robertsoni.
A group of 4 thorichthys pasionis and a cribroheros robertsoni or two would look nice.

I agree with dan518, I go by the 10 gallons per inch of adult cichlid rule (that does "not" mean only one individual, so with my rule nothing over 9" in a 90 gallon.
And the nanolueus would fit nicely, they are not hard on plants, and also give you great color.

panamense or sajica would also work

although I believe sajica are a little harder on plants

Gorgeous specimens

Yeah, that's the guy that caught my eye

That's a 10" female. It took 7 years to get to that size. They usually stay around 8". They need a sand substrait to sift. A group would probably work in that tank. They are really peaceful cichlid so avoid anything else that is aggressive.

Is that the astathetos/cichlasoma/amphilophus robertsoni then?

Yup. They went from amphilophus to astatheros and now cribroheros. Changes also include a speration of robertsoni-two species:
C. Robertsoni (what I have).
C. Cf robertsoni which looks slightly different. It has more red on the belly and gills. Less blue.
They look like this.
