so i just picked up a 90 gal tank from a mfk member. i want to know the best way to cycle a tank this big.ive already put a small grain rock substrate and filled it up with conditioned and stress zymed water.i know i need to introduce ammonia for the bb to grow but what is the best way . i really dont wanna put any chemicals in the tank.

Plain ammonia can be bought at hardware stores. "Janitorial grade" is what mine is called. A little bit goes a long way. Visit our "setup and filtration" section for more information.

Make sure the ammonia doesn't have any detergents in it, shake the bottle, if it foams, it's the wrong kind. It should also have an ingredients label.

:iagree:

However, if you want a more hands-free approach, put a big shrimp in a pantyhose and submerge it in the tank. As it rots, it releases ammonia. Leave it alone and test in 6 weeks. When NH3 and NO2 readings are 0, and NO3 is >0, cycling is done.

Listen to laticauda. While you are at the hardware store pick up live bacteria for septic tanks. 3 pounds $10. Looks like saw dust. Petsmart sells it for $5 a tablespoon! Don't piss in your tank(lol)

You could try to get Pure NH3 from the school lab like I did :)

Ive completely converted to just throwing fish in a tank and using Seachem Stability until the tank is fully cycled. Have yet to even come close to losing a fish. If water levels get too high, just do a water change with prime, then add more stability.

Look into the bacteria that I was talking about. It's great with detritus. Like I said Petsmart sells it by the tablespoon. The brand that I have is SEPTI-PAC SEPTIC SYSTEM TREATMENT. it is 100% beneficial bacteria/enzyme. Harmless to the tank. No chemicals. Great for big water changes or gravel users.
