900 Gallon aquarium on floor above basement

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is not that risky of an endeavor with the proper bracing installed in the basement. If the op has no background in construction then I would for sure recommend contracting someone who does to be sure the floor is properly supported. Another comment that may be off base is to sat that a diy plywood tank is going to look like crap in his living space. I'll be making a plywood tank in the next few months that will be the centerpiece of my office and it will look every bit as nice as an acrylic setup that was recommended for a fraction of the cost.

I hired a builder who hired an engineer. They installed a beam and supports in my finished basement for my 400 gallon located on the floor above. It cost about 1,800.00 but the peace of mind was worth it to me. Just remember if you do it yourself and you have a problem your insurance will be less likely to be cooperative.

There are a lot of arguments for going for the basement. Close proximity to the drain, you can make it 4ft or more deep. There is also the option to save on materials. I used the corner of my basement, using the back corner walls and floors for the tank.. its basically just cedar 6x6's forming two window frames.. very simple. Its also 4.5 feet deep.. doing that upstairs definitely NOT simple.

Mines 6.5 ft deep and there was no other place to put it but in the basement. If you have the space why not utilize the basement? Seems like you limit potential on any other floor.

This is before i fiberglassed and painted it.
