What kind of fish would be good in a 900 Gallon pond I want to build under my deck? Don't want Koi in this pond. This will be my first outdoor pond but I have a pretty good idea of the setup. Don't plan on having a substrate in it, but I can if required.

I thought it would be cool to have some fish that I caught myself, a bass or two maybe? Arowana's would be cool but it may be hard to heat the tank over winter.

Only concern is that a bass would eat or harass my 7 inch goldfish (maybe?) that needs a new home if I can't make another pond for him.

So any recommendations for fish are welcome, thanks.

Thanks for the replies.

Would this still be an issue if the goldfish was considerably larger than the bass?

I may need to end up with a separate pond for my giant feeder fish.

I've had sunfish in my pond before, along with bullhead catfish that seem pretty peaceful as long as you give them enough space.

if you want you can put blue gills in there. they wont hurt your goldfish. you can try native fish.

Catfish ponds are fun. My Uncle in Thailand has one with nothing but Catfish. The Catfish go into a feeding frenzy. It's awesome! I used to have a few Channel Cats in my old pond. They were awesome during feeding time.

if you get a rtc eventually the fish will get the gold fish I have never kept one but I hear they can eat alot bigger fish then gold fish so you would have to build yourself a new pond for the gold fish ... then you could go bass some catfish sunfish ... what ever you really want I would go with native species if you don't want to heat it

Thanks for the input. Only negative thing about catfish are the barbs. Redtail would probably get too big as it can only be about 5 feet wide and they get over 4 feet.

Maybe I can fish out some minnows as food from the stream behind my house. Any ways to trap little fish in creeks or streams?
