I'm getting another tank. I plan on getting a 90g tank, that I want to have 1 Oscar, 1 Convict, and 1 Dempsey. I know thats pushing it, but will be doing 80% water changes weekly, and will have 2 Cascade 1500's for filtration(heavily filtered). I would like to put 5 Tiger Barbs in as dithers, would that be good or would they become lunch? I could go with 3 Silver Dollars if you you guys think the Barbs won't work out? Thanks for the help, this site is awsome!! Thanks

If you have to have dithers go with the Silver Dollars, the Barbs would be lunch and Tin foil barbs grow very large and your tank would be way to small.

Yeah my 6inch Jag took out 13 tiger barbs in less than a week, definitely go with a bigger dither. But you're not going to have the room, the oscar itself is enough for that tank.

You'd be ok doing 50-60% changes on the tank, just make sure you get all the waste out of the gravel. Also, if you get the fish at a certain size you could get a school of 6-8 Tiger Barbs and probably be ok with them as dithers.

I was thinking about using my tiger barbs from my 20gal as ditchers for my green terror thats going into my 60gal. I really would like to use denison barbs but they are too expensive ($15 ea) to be ditcher with a terror so I might be leaning towards rainbows, congo tetras, or giant danios.

Congo Tetra's, those are very cool looking fish. I think those would actually look cool and compliment a GT nicely. As for the others, Silver Dollars or Tiger Barbs would be good. I'm still debating on mine though... also waiting until I empty a tank to make room for em.

One more question, do you think a male or female Nic maybe a better choice than the Dempsey. So I would have 1 Oscar, 1 Convict, 1 Nic, and 3 SD's. Thanks

strictly from a bioload stand point you would be pushing it, factor in aggression and i don't think it would work

Didn't mean to hi-jack the thread but thanks!

I prefer the JD over the Nicaraguan's as the JD was my #2 choice for my 60gal setup. I wish I could fit both my GT with a JD or even a BGJD or EBJD. That could also be a choice to go with a EBJD since they tend to be a bit smaller and less aggressive then a normal JD. You could probably ditch the Convict and add the JD, but every cichlid is different so they might be aggressive towards one another or ignore each other all together. Like Ceeej31 stated cichlids create a large bio-load especially the Oscar.

Id get all your fish as juvies and allow them to grow out/up together to create some sort of tolerance for one another. Again the Oscar will out grow all other fish in that tank and you should be ready to move any fish that is getting bullied extensively to another acceptable size tank. Filtration and maintenance will be key in your set-up. But I say if you have the resources, commitment, dedication, and of course a back up plan for these fish, I say go for it!
