93 Gallon Amazon Discus Biotype

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are plenty of undemanding beautiful plants that do not require Co2 or crazy high light. Java Fern and Anubias are wonderful hardy species and most of us discus keepers use them in the adult tanks. Just a thought if you wanted to look into it. Java Fern is pretty cheap too. Neither require substrate at all.

I guess I'll look into getting some easy to grow plants. Does anybody have any good sources for plants?

And my friend confirmed that he is taking the tank down, so I am the new owner of the rescued fish. Amazingly, nothing died overnight and everyone was out and eating this morning. I'm still not sure if I'm going to rehome some of these fish and get discus or if I'm just gonna go with angels instead.

Update time:

First, I decided to ditch my plant-less tank idea and ordered some easy to grow plants. Several different species of anubias, some water sprite, water wisteria, and Java ferns. Tempatures here are frigid, so I'm guessing the plants will not be shipped this week. I'm perfectly fine with that, it would stink to get a box of frozen plants.

Secondly, all the rescue fish are doing great! I'm honestly very surprised, I figured there would be at least a few casualties, especially the tetras which looked horrible when I first added them.

I've been looking into angels and some of the koi varieties have really interested me, gorgeous fish! I was hoping my LFS would have some of the koi variety but they only had the normal brown/grey banded ones. I'm beginning to think I'm going to do Angels in this tank, they just seem much less fragile than discus.

I'll post some pics once I recieve the plants and get them all positioned in the tank.

Water wisteria will look great at first, then you will probably hate it when it goes insane.

If you want a nice aged effect to the wood, tie on java moss with some fishing line or similar; looks superb

I need to look into the java moss, that's a cool idea! I guess I'll give the wisteria a try and if it goes too crazy I'll just pull it. Thanks for the advice!

no worries :) I'm a noob with plants, but I think some really nice set-ups can be created with the easy ones. I might have also forgotten to mention vallisernia, its another easy plant that grows long and grass-like, ideal for discus and angels

Okay, one last update until next week. I found a great deal locally for some wild type Alenquer Discus, about 2.5-3" long, went to check them out this morning and look awesome! So the breeder is holding 6 for me until I'm sure the tank is completely ready to go. I'm probably going to take the rainbow fish to my LFS this weekend, as they are out competing the tetras and would probably scare the discus with their aggressive feeding habits. I'll probably keep the lone angel, I'll just put him in my brothers nano tank until the discus get settled in for a week or two. Like I said earlier I'll snap some pics next week after I get the plants situated.

Thanks again for the help guys!

Update time!

We have plants!

It took almost 2 hours to position and tie everything in place (using thread with wet hands and wet driftwood was aggravating to say the least) but the end result was well worth the struggle!

Now onto a possible issue with the discus which I was supposed to pick up next Wednesday. I've been reading up more about discus and it seems that it is only recommended that 'adult' discus should placed in a planted aquarium and that juveniles need to be kept in barebottom aquariums. As I already have 3 other tanks, two of them being saltwater reef tanks, and my reptile enclosures I simply do not have the space to set up another separate tank just to grow out discus. The discus I'm supposed to get are 2.5-3" in length, so is this too small to be put into this tank? If so I may have to find another source for some larger discus.

I finally got my discus!

Ended up ordering them from Discus Hans USA since the ones I had sourced locally were very small (1.75-2.25"), I'm very impressed with the fish I received! I ended up going with 5, 3"+ Santarem discus, I was very pleasantly surprised when I opened the bags and all the fish were at least 3.5-3.75" in length. I was gonna try and snap a few pictures but of course, they're all hiding in amongst the driftwood and plants at the moment.

I'd highly recommend Discus Hans to anybody looking to purchase discus online.
