A Beginner!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yes i do...i am planning to upgrade to 55gal then from there to a 200+ gal..

Depending on how dedicated you may be, and want to try something a little bit bigger, look thru the peacock forum an ask some questions. Pbass are great entertainment just need a large aquarium and some good filtration

Maybe a little early for P-Bass.....

@ wiggles92 im not sure myself but i have a 20gal from my buddy...fish im not sure wat kind but i dont really like oscar, fh, and goldfish bc they eat tooooo much and tooo big...im pretty interested in the pbass, rtc, and sturgeon...:)

You're looking at some pretty big aquariums in a short period of time for all of those fishes.

I think the best starter size tank (from experience) would be a 75 gallon. That's the size I started with.. It's not too small, and not too big.

My first starter fish were Jack Dempseys because I really liked how they looked. I ended up getting a M/F pair out of the ones I bought, and they had babies. It was a great experience.

But, as a beginner, you state no FH, No Oscars, No goldfish because they eat too much.. but then you state the fish you want to keep RTC, Sturgeon.. those eat way more than the fish you stated you didn't want. lol. And they require way more than 200 gallons. I had a Red Tail x Tiger Shovelnose Hybrid catfish.. bought him at 3".. in less than 6 months, he was more than 20"! And he ate more than a handful of pellets in a feeding. He was a pig.

I would start with something simple, and work your way up. See what the pet store carries- find something you like, and start from there. Fish aren't going anywhere, no need to rush into something big. :D

For me the ideal starter size is 55 gallons. It gives you space and options, but its not too big.

I'm confused a bit about what you want to keep though. You may want to try silver dollars or a cichlid (if you intend to upgrade to 55+).

For the tank you have right now you could try tiger barbs, BNs, or kribs.

It really comes down to which fish you like and your personal preference.

What do you like? Look on the posts and see what you like the best. If you want a community you can find a lot of nice peaceful fish and get a good variety that you can start in a 20g and upgrade to the 55g. If you like slightly more aggressive but variety in color some cichlids would be good. It's up to what you like. Also go to a couple LFS (Local Fish Stores) and see what they actually have that you like. Talk to the people there and ask what they recommend too. For now though setup that 20g and get it cycling.

x2 55 gallon+ tank. 75 if you can afford it. 1 large canister filter (Rena XP3 size) for a 55, 2 large canister filters for a 75. Stuff them both with mech pads and bio scrubbies. Do not put anything chemical in them. Invest the money up front on a decent tank size and good filters and your set to do whatever you want. Freshwater or saltwater (fish only no reef).
