I always have the urge to build/fix anything and everything, anybody else like this? Since I had the day off toda I wanted to fix this sump but I had no way of getting the materials I needed so I've been bored all day. About a hour ago I was sitting upstairs bored and decided I'd go down into the fishroom and wouldn't come up until I've built something.

So lately I've been trying to think of ways to do water changes on my larger 100+gallon tanks other than the hose and bucket method. The python just wastes a ton of water. This is what I ended up with..

first model - operates by putting my finger in the bottom and sucking on the airline I attatched until it creates a siphon.

second model - gravity at its best!

I know its not the best invention ever but I think its better than the flimsy hosing I have that always manages to manuever its way out of my bucket ++ with the PVC, I don't have to hold it. I have a ton of extra PVC laying around anyways and I can interchange the pieces for tanks of different heights. The best part is, if its close enough or I can make a connection with a slope at all I can siphon it into the toilet lol. Maybe next time I will actually think of something useful to build..

btw I still use the python to clean everything off the bottom of the tank, this is just to change larger %'s of water.

the toilet keeps up?
i did the same thing as you a while back, but out a window
my big one drains 80g in 2 min flat,i dont think a toilet could handle that lol
you can check mine out in my diy thread below then my quick drains
:)

you're the DIY master hands down. Haven't seen anybody like you on any other forums lol. My toilet magically drains itself without me flushing, don't know why, don't care why.

and toilets do that but i figured it might be to much but good to hear its not
:)
i know a toilet couldnt handle mine lol
what size pipe you use?

Cool idea.

I took a little different approach to the same problem.
I have a water barrel just outside my livingroom window. I put a 'pond pump' in the barrel attached to the python hose. The pump replaces the running water from the tap and I still have lots of suction to vac the gravel.

It will work for the summer - winter it is back to running the tap.
I figure that the pump will pay for itself in water savings by the end of the summer - next year is free.

not sure, I think its 1/2". Its the cheapest/most common one home depot had. I overbought for some project a while ago. They were only like $1-1.50 per 8-10' at the most.
