A bit worried, please help

Have you cycled the new tank before the plecos arrive? I get the impression you haven't, and since your plecos have almost arrived, I suggest using Seachem Stability to do a fast cycle.

If the babies got sucked into the filter in the old tank, that's probably what caused the problem... they started decomposing and the bacterial colony wasn't equipped to handle the extra ammonia and your fish were poisoned.

You could get your piranha onto prepared foods, you don't need to feed live. It's honestly a lot more work, and more money.

Yes I have fed piranahas pellets in the past. A lot more cleaner. Check out some other cool cichlids out there. Piranahas are really kind of boring. Too bad you aren't close to Michigan as I would give you some seeded gravel and a seeded sponge out of my aquaclear 110. That would really jump start your biological filter.

aquasafe is fine.. I use it, and have no issues. prime is usually the product of choice around here because it treats large amounts of water for a fairly low price. The advise you've gotten so far is def sound. I would also say take some poop from your P's filter and re-seed your other tank.

I did re-introduce biology into the tank. It had a bio-wheel that was cycled in the filter, and lightly rinsed the 2 stages from my Pir. filter that didn't include carbon. 1/2 of the new water was also from the pir tank. Params have been a bit up and down, but not crazy since, and I did get a master test kit to keep a better eye on things.

I also got some Prime. I'll probably use up the Aquasafe in my pir tank as there have been no issues there, and use prime in the pleco tank. I suppose I could also compare to see if one is working better than the other.

As for the deaths... I do believe it was Ammonia. All the guppies started sitting at the top of the tank gulping air despite the 8 inch air stone I have. Their gills were also a bit inflamed, so I don't think they were getting any oxygen... I got about 2 days notice when they moved to the top of the water.

Thank you to all who helped! I'll be a bit more diligent to check all parameters from now on.

For future reference, there's no need to use used tank water, because all you're doing is adding nitrates into the new tank.
