A bittersweet week for the poly tank.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would wait until you have the 150 fish in the 310 so you can give the rays time to eat alone, or you could use a smaller tank if you go for pups. Hard water will make CB pups more attractive if you don't wanna get on your RO game. If you start with small rays you might find it easier to get the hardware in the sump and then add media down the line. Pups don't really produce too much waste, tiny mouths and tiny bellies pretty much grow exponentially though, so 6 months down the line you will want to add more media. I wouldn't touch cichla until rays are older, rays can be outcompeted pretty easily and cichla can eat themselves to death. I agree cichla are awesome though, I always look at them and feel like my 30 width won't keep them happy for too long.

ya I just worry that if something happens or the rays have a bad reaction to my well water then I'm out a couple hundi, possibly a couple thousi haha.
ya I have raised native bass and I'm guessing the behaviors are similar with regards to being pigs.

Yeah I hear that, I'm always a bit of a wreck even with new arrivals. I certainly think planning ahead is important too. it might be chance but my older rays aren't great hunters, pretty much unless tilapia falls on them they won't even know it's there. The combination of having to over feed to make sure the rays eat there share and the pain of having cichla above them sounds like a not fun way to start out. That said, the feeding vids would always be awesome when they are all big.

haha for sure they would. As you've now got me sitting here at work thinking about stock lists instead of work haha, I'm thinking I might try out a poly/wolf/odoe combo. the bushfish and loaches will just have to stay in the 150 haha, the loaches especially. The youngin's in the squad would be snacks within minutes of adding big LJ's and wolfs.

OR IN TRUE MFK FASHION! I'll go buy another tank haha....
