I have been contemplating changing it up for awhile. My tiger Barbs have rescently been getting bloat, so I sold the group off so it wasen't a complete loss as I couldn't figure out why. I am considering doing Mollies, Platties, and Possibly swords as dithers. Figure live barers will be fun and I can sell the young that survive for some extra cash now and then as it won't be as bad as trying to sell large fish. Jr.(My Midas) seems to care less about tank mates as long as they stay out of the way, so I have no worries. I also have layed the logs down so they could hold fake plants as I prep Jr for live plants.

I am getting a few bags of "Eco Complete Planted Black Aquarium Substrate" and Black Seachem Flourite Plant Substrate to mix up. Going to start some Mondo Grass and mix in a few smaller sword plants that only grow about 6". So Far he likes just lurking along the fake plants and doesn't mess with anything. He also doesn't chill in his pot anymore and likes to hover by the plants more. Going to also order some MTS's to help with the gravel which will give the clowns something to snack on when they get to high in numbers. What do you guys think? Also note for the new members.......This does not always(If ever) work with a Midas. I just have a chub that is lazy and likes to be eye candy.:naughty:

i think it sounds like a good idea...just make sure you have enough space for everything..

Sorry to hear about the Tiger Barbs. I was always pretty impressed with the pictures of them schooling in your tank with that big Midas. The contasting sizes and colors of orange and white looked very good. I hope your new set up is even better.

I have been using white sailfin mollies as dithers with my GT and JD for a few months now with no issues at all I really like the look against the black background. The fry don't last very long but that was the whole idea so it worked out for me.
Plants IDK hit or miss there see what happens tugging on the fake plants may = munching on the live ones.
The MTS is a great idea with the loaches. Hope they don't do such a good job they can't establish. I had a good population in with my Discus untill I added Dwarf Loaches and in three months they were all gone.

I think it's a good plan. Better than my foray into Tiger Barbs....lol

mondo grass isn't aquatic. Also, eco complete and flourite don't really provide much for the plants. You could save a lot of money by just using regular sand/gravel and putting some fertilizer tabs in it (I use osmocote which isn't made for the purpose but works great)

Home Depot also sells a 10lb. bag of aquatic plant soil that is safe for fish and doesn't alter PH for about $9-$10. I know that its used for Koi ponds. I'm not sure how well it works with large cichlids. The package says that it doesn't cloud the water when disturbed by fish either. My wife wants a planted tank so I think I will try this soil.

Maybe I was wrong about the name, but when I live in Oklahoma the grass I had grew like crazy. I'll have to do some more research. I want to do the substrate because it will be abit weighted and will be easier for the snails to burrow in and get away from the loaches. I have read the loaches can get to the snails easier in the sand.
