A cichlid pair for a 40 breeder

I'd do blue acara if I had the spare space to set it up.

The first time my bartoni spawned, they were growing out in a 45 gal high tank, male about 3" female 2". There were 3 other bartoni, and 5 Stomatepia pindu growing out in the tank at the time, I was only able to remove 1 extra bartoni and 2 pindu before the pair killed the others. As they grew, the next spawn came in a 55 gal, and they were then moved to a 125gal and spawned again.
After the 3 spawns, the pair ended up with a member of our local club, who put them alone in a 55 gal, where the male almost immediately killed the female.

I can have 2 young pair cryptoheros nanoluteus in a 40B, they spawn on separate ends of the tank with a small clay pot for each pair and some distracting sight breaks in there, fake plants or whatever works.
OR one pair of those along with one pair of Inca stone fish are compatible, will spawn at separate ends. the stone fish are not hard on a different species pair as they are on each other. They killed one biggest pretty competitors in a 40B, overnight :-[

I think one good proven pair of Geo redhead tapajos could work in a well-kept 40B, IF you could find a pair for sale. that's about how much territory my spawners claim within a larger tank. but that tank is too small for a group to grow and pair off in. the initial group interaction is part of strengthening the pair bonds & parental learning. after that, it's easy & very fun to watch.

I wouldn't put a pair of grammodes in a 40.
I bought half dozen 1" grammodes a few years ago at an ACA convention, and put them in a 75 gal with some equivalent size dithers to grow out.
After killing the dithers, the largest male took out all but 1 female.
They did spawn a few times while young, but he then killed the female.
I believe a 75 is only big enough for 1 long term. Although I have seen a grammodes fit comfortably in a 225 gal community, when all other fish were twice its size.

the inca stone fish seems pretty interesting but where could i find some from?
