Barron's book on Freshwater Stingrays mentions that their discs are very sensitive, so I never risked putting him on a substrate. Perhaps they would do well on a coated sand like Estes.
 
i read the same book. i wonder what kind of sand they have in their natural environment.
 
is woody still alive u could always keep a feeder tank and try and gut load the feeded fish for some added nutrition ? just a thought im interested in one there diff than the usual ray for sure anyone know the longest anyones kept one ?

Unfortunately he jumped out of the tank of the person I gave him to :(
I did consider gut loading the feeders and I also considered breeding my own tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus). I would much rather wean one on to defrosted fish fillets.

The longest I know of anyone keeping one would be either the MFK members Ozy or Woodysun. They were both very helpful and informative when I inquired about their rays.
