I think it's the way the light is hitting it and it's not black but rather a dark shade of grey...Otherwise he'd have shown more photos of it by now.

Normally I'd be inclined to agree with you, but the fins are what give it away IMO. It has the odd colors in a few other pics in the thread, but this was simply the clearest shot.

I'm hatching a hypothesis on what makes black Goliaths black and I PM'd him about this fish. If it was black and lost its color, I'll have a very interesting thread to post in a few weeks.

There just might be a reason why mine is getting so dark. ;)
 
At first I thought it was flash and angle of the atf, but if you open and expand the picture you can clearly see the actual colour difference between this individual vs the others.

Very cool to clearly see how they can stand out amongst a crowd of juvenile atf.
