A confirmed, legit tank raised black Goliath? Check this out!

Is this the same gatf you posted earlier? Or yours? Thanks for sharing!

Thats mine.

Crap, I had typed stuff to go with it but I didn't realize that I didn't post it.

I've noticed that mine is much darker than normal, even to the point that he is very hard to see against the black background in my tank. This is well documented in his grow out thread. But he's more of a very, very dark brownish grey when you look at him, but he gets darker from day to day. What really stands out to me is the brown and black on his fins, just like the big black ones in Douglas Dann's famous pictures.

I looked at the first pic I posted, then looked at it again, then looked at it some more. I'm no expert photographer, but I'm not clueless either. After pondering over that pic, I figured that I had a pretty good idea how that picture was taken. Namely, an ok camera, automatic settings, flash pointed straight into the tank, camera pointed at the fish from an oblique angle through the glass in front of and above the fish.

I then went into the fish room with my camera and tried to replicate what I saw in the picture I shared to start this thread. The picture attached in the above post was the result. Granted my fish isn't as dark as the one in the first post, but he's very dark.

I'm just curious how much darker he's gonna get. I wonder how much darker he needs to get before I can say I have a black one.

pretty interesting stuff, would very much like to see what this fish looks like now... that would be AWESOME if Max turned out to be a Black Goliath!

My theory is that ATFs blend in with it's background. In a black background, the ATF will become a tad bit darker. Or...it's just the lighting.

JL's Black tiger seems to have a damaged eye so it might be blind. might be the flash though. If the ATF can't see anything but black, i'm guessing the the tiger will "turn" into a darker color. This happens exactly the same with polypertus. The blind ones will be a pitch dark color. Very cool. bichirs in darker substrate will also turn dark.

Plainly my opinion.

have you got a link to these? just tried googling to no avail...

Here's the only picture that I have uploaded right now. Douglas Dann (go to his website here) is a great guy who has been very helpful to me in our correspondence. I contacted him in an effort to get some blacks to import, but he's living in Quebec now.

I can't help but notice looking at this picture again that Max has the light stripe over his lateral line just like that big fish does.

Edit, here's the pic lol-

I hope he does too! I'm gonna keep doing what I've been doing and hope he continues to get darker lol

I'm telling you there's a difference between the ones I've seen and what we have. The tails have a black edging as opposed to the ragged and white edging. The nose also looks different.

I agree completely that our fish look different than a normal Goliath. I noticed in some pics of your fish that it has black rays in his fins like Max did before he started getting really dark.

You and I posted at nearly the same time lol

And your opinion has merit and your input is appreciated.

I'll agree that an ATF will show darker colors in a blacked out tank. We've all seen pics of ones over a dark substrate that show better, richer colors. However, the vast majority of GATF over a black substrate are still chrome with a red splotch on the tail and tan fins. Max is notably darker than others, I've been intrigued by this for some time.

I don't know what to think about your blind hypothesis. I suppose it may have some merit. However, Max's eyes are perfect and he's showing similar colors, too.

I'm not prepared to say that I have a black Goliath simply because I don't want to set myself for disappointment. I am cautiously optimistic, however.
