What is the smallest species of Polypterus, there price, and what size tank do they need?

albino senegal, around $10-15 and 29 gallon minimum.

for starters, look at the primer thats a sticky, or go to polypterus.info

the primer that beblondie wrote is much MUCH more informative and the information is more correct, as that website i gave you says a senegal maxes out at 20", which may be correct as a world record of some sort, but the recognized max is around 12" and the albino senegals get even smaller most of the time.

What would be a suitable size for a senegal?

Would a 55gal suit 1 or 2?

a 29 gallon would suit 1 senegal, if you get a 55, you have MANY options.

look at a delhezi or a palmas polli. When i get my 55, i'm going to go with a delhezi or palmas, a rope fish and then a larger cichlid aswell.

But DO check out the delhezi and palmas polli, both are better lookers then the senegal.

yeah senegalus..id do a 20 long

Senegal

the palmas polli basically looks just like the senegal, but darker, and it has a marbling pattern that really adds to it imo. But the delhezi is probably the best looking bichir although there is a little debate of the large ornate being the bichir of the most beauty

I often hear 29 gallon is the min for senegals but I think it really should be a standard 40 breeder or even a standard 30 gallon. I have 20 gallon long and I feel it's too small for even a 6 incher let alone for a 10-12" one. Senegals aren't the most beautiful bichir but they make up for it with their personality since they are the most active of the group.
