heckelii are late maturing to breed. IMO, no way they'd show breeding behavior at under 3 1/2 inches.
they probably need more space.

They were going to go into the 70 at 4 inches, they were pretty close to eing able to, only in the 30 for about a month. They were cuddling up next to each other and digging a hole in the corner, idk about the breeding habits thats what was going on

I got a m/f from Rapps at 3 1/2" each. IIRC he said it takes at least a couple years before worrying about breeding [aggression to each other]. I lost my male suddenly after less than 2 years. Never got to the breeding stage, but I didn't want to risk breeding my male as he was our favorite character.
Mine would hang together as buddies & especially found security with each other during any disturbances. Your description sounds like what mine did. when crowded, "Hunker down" ;-)
They were in a 75G first, & moved to a 180G a little over a year later. by then, they needed more space. Normally very mellow fish, but capable of sudden burst of speed. was comfortable in the 180.

Oh i was never told that about the heckelli, the dude i got em from is pretty read up on cichlids and im not very into them just got them as cleaners essentially. He told me theyd be fine in my 30 for at least 6 months, this is the only piece of info i didnt check over on here as i usually do w/ advice from the lfs. I still have one, im putting him in the 70 based on what you tell me, hopefully he will be like the balzani and just get checked out and not attacked by the preds. I never see mine going very fast, the balzani would go faster and harder then they would.

Naw, I didn't mean that they usually move fast, they're very mellow fish. before I moved them, my male did some fast ricochets due to getting suddenly startled. just quick, then settle right down. he only needed more room.
I wouldn't put them with anything aggressive.
