because they bloat very easily when young

as for the ornatum, i dont have the space or anything for them and would definitely wait till their price goes down a bit anyways but has anyone who has raised these guys had trouble with them? like do they have any weird health concerns like beani do?

It simply means the identity is not confirmed. Since no one seems to know where ornatus belongs in the whole cichlid tree (hence the exCichlasoma tag) and not much is known about the species in general it seems like the correct labeling to me.

Yeah, I agree with that. It just seems that the average hobbyist is happy to abbreviate important details like that to the point where its forgotten, and in 5 years time we'll have another "true green terror" type debate.

The "cf." is an abbreviation for "compare to", meaning that ex Cichlasoma cf. ornatus is possibly within the species exC. ornatus, or part of a closely related group.

According to the Cichlid Room Companion (www.cichlidae.com):

Ornatum are very closely related to festae. exCichlasoma ornatum is distinguished from its closest relative 'Cichlasoma' festae by its coloration and the caudal peduncle which in ornatum is longer than in festae. Further the canine teeth of the lower jaw are closer together than those of the upper jaw, whereas in festae it is just the opposite. Adult specimens of exCichlasoma ornatum are generally more slender than adult festae.

Stomach examinations revealed that they may be feeding on snails.

yeah i havent raised hatians but ive raised cubans and they were just fine, kept tank at 80 and fed them like all my other cichlids (more veggie based diet also helps to prevent bloat, but i feed my cichlids algae wafers a couple times a week so this may have helped with my cubans) i think people have success with beanis by raising them in a species specific tank when little or by having each one divided by itself so that its stress is kept at a minimum

and dog of war, that was a very interesting read, they definitely look like they are related to festae that's for sure. interesting bit about the snails as well...

Someone once told me that the reason young Haitian's need high temps is because of their wild counter parts. In Haiti, the young stay in the shallow water for safety where the summer time water temps can be in the 90's. It sounded logical at the time.

In my humble opinion they are much closer to Atromaculatum in behavior and body shape then to Festae. I have had the pleasure of keeping all three and similarity to one another goes Festae- Atromaculatum-Ornatum in my experience......
