Epitaph to a Dog, by Lord Byron

Near this Spot
are deposited the Remains of one
who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferosity,
and all the virtues of Man without his Vices.

This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery
if inscribed over human Ashes,
is but a just tribute to the Memory of
BOATSWAIN, a DOG,
who was born in Newfoundland May 1803
and died at Newstead Nov. 18, 1808.

When some proud Son of Man returns to Earth,
Unknown by Glory, but upheld by Birth,
The sculptor’s art exhausts the pomp of woe,
And storied urns record who rests below.
When all is done, upon the Tomb is seen,
Not what he was, but what he should have been.
But the poor Dog, in life the firmest friend,
The first to welcome, foremost to defend,
Whose honest heart is still his Master’s own,
Who labours, fights, lives, breathes for him alone,
Unhonoured falls, unnoticed all his worth,
Denied in heaven the Soul he held on earth –
While man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven,
And claims himself a sole exclusive heaven.

Oh man! thou feeble tenant of an hour,
Debased by slavery, or corrupt by power –
Who knows thee well must quit thee with disgust,
Degraded mass of animated dust!
Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat,
Thy tongue hypocrisy, thy heart deceit!
By nature vile, ennobled but by name,
Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame.
Ye, who perchance behold this simple urn,
Pass on – it honors none you wish to mourn.
To mark a friend’s remains these stones arise;
I never knew but one – and here he lies.

Im glad you and yours are jumping back into the ring with more dogs!! Great way to honour your first trio

this is a poem i have printed up in large above my fireplace - i think it sums it up perfectly when you must say goodbye and do the right thing.

IF IT SHOULD BE
If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle can’t be won,
You will be sad, I understand,
Don’t let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love and friendship stand the test.
We’ve had so many years,
What is to come can hold no fears.
Would you want me to suffer? So,
When the time comes please let me go,
Take me where my needs they’ll tend,
Only, stay with me until the end.
And hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.
It is a kindness that you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Do not grieve it should be you
Who must decide this thing to do.
We’ve been so close, we two these years,
Don’t let your heart hold any tears.

melissa my thoughts are with you right now - the pain never goes away, it just gets easier to deal with.
Beautiful read....

so much truth and eloquence in every word... what a poet

unfortunately my partner and i have had extremely bad luck with our peis - emma had a condition called amyloidosis - basically her kidneys failed and we had to have her put to sleep aged 6. this awful condition is hereditary and so winnie lived till 7.5 - sissy died suddenly from a twisted gut - she must have got off our bed in the middle of the night and we found her in the morning with an extremely abstended stomach - by the time we got her to the vets it was too late... sissy was aged 5.

on a happier note gemma and charlie have settled in wonderfully and are already warming to us with lots of cuddles and kisses - i will post some pics up once i get a chance

RED DEVIL is right - you must cherish every moment you have with your best friends as you never know when they will be taken from you...

I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY.

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels.
I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.
I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage.
I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today.
Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her.
Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.

A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.
I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.
I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor.
So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors.
So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.
