A fair question re: minimum tank size?

So...I'm currently housing a jaguar cichlid...about 8 inches...in a 75 gallon. Not sure of the sex. Anyway....I'm reading EVERYWHERE that it needs a 125 gallon as a full sized adult so it can comfortably turn around? Fair enough. I will be searching out the local craigslist for a future home...but wait!!!....the widths of both the 75 and 125 are both 19 inches. So what's the scoop?

Look for a 125 standard, not a 125 show.The standards are 24" deep (60" x 24" x 20.5").

fair enough question. for a jag, say 16" male a 6ft 125 be fine. Keep in mind 16" jag is not the norm in a tank, more like 14" , the foot print of the tank be fine. Water volume the next issue. larger water volume along with proper bio filtration = to manageable water quality. think one fin level water change a week instead of 3. My jag pair do just fine in a 145 tall. same dem as far as foot print as a 125. just taller.

and before I get greef, vid of the jags in a 145. nesting about 3 months ago. I see no turn around issues. they both over 3 years old.

now would i think of putting a dovii in such a tank? not a chance, jags be fine.

Weird....but in researching the only tanks I'm seeing that are wider than 18 inches are the 120, 180, and 210? And the 120 is only 4 feet long? Maybe the 120 is what you mean.

I found a 150 on craigslist...got all excited...but it's still only 18 inches deep. Hmmm

What do you mean by fin level water changes? ?

Fin level is fish "sitting" on the substrate with it's dorsal fin touching air. 90%+ water change
