I am having a lot of trouble focusing on them using my 100mm macro lens. I was wondering if going to a 50 or 60 mm macro lens might work out better. Either that or using a tube between the body and the lens to allow me to focus closer to the lens.
Depending on the camera you are using...you can try spot focus. The Nikon that I use has an option for straight up spot focus as well as spot focus combined with a modified field focus. In set up you can choose the how big a range the "spot" will be....6mm, 8mm, etc. IN addition the aperture you choose will be very helpful. Shooting at higher apertures will increase your depth of field. Not sure what the aperture was in the fry photos posted here...excellent shots BTW...but anytime you get in that close your DOF is going to be very small. The higher the aperture the better. Most of my shots are at f22 or higher. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for all the comments and all of the advice. In order to get these I did bypass the autozoom and went manual. I think that helped out quite a bit. My next step is to up the aperture I guess. If I get time I will try that this evening.
For these shots I used the following settings:
Exposure time: 1/250
Aperture: f/9.0
ISO: 200
Canon 50D
Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro
Canon 430EX II flash w/ Gary Fong diffuser and cactus remote
Thank you. I tried using auto focus but it didn't work out too well. I had much better luck when I started using manual focus. Short answer...yes, I used manual focus.
