Damn right ;) It really is a beast. It's bitten my finger on more than on occasion now, trying to get prawns before they enter the tank.

Also if another fish gets a piece of prawn he is aiming for, like the loisellei or papy, he bites them on the face and gives them a quick shake. He is a mean mofo.

As you can see, when the prawns drop in, he hammers any prawns he can floating down, then he goes down to the bottom and steals the other fishes share. It's quite hard to make sure all the fish eat.

I thought about how you are concerned about whether the other fish are getting enough to eat.. do you have food that floats that the Arrow would love, then while he is picking off the floating food you can be throwing some in for the bottom feeders and giving them a chance to eat before Arrow boy does his diving act. Infact this is probably the reason he does this..it is because all the food goes to the bottom and he is getting hostile that they are eating what he thinks belongs to him..the Arrow have BIG ego's you know! Mine did get all nasty when one of the large plecos decided to come up to the top and try and grab one of the Arrows pellets.. the arrow went over to the pleco and whipped him with his tail.. but if everyone eats where their suppose to it may eliminate some aggression in the Arrow.. towards his room mates, and then they all may thrive better.

Thanks Stotty, I appreciate it ;)

I was lucky to get a nice specimen, when he arrived at about 8.5 inches, his colouration was already good. But since I've had him the colours have improved again, especially the colour detail on the scales. He is shinier too.

It's lucky I am using a water filter, the fish didn't look too hot in the terrible Spanish water.

The aro's diet is really just prawns and hikari pellets, but I get fairly large, decent quality prawns. And occasionally I feed him lance fish. Even at 12 inches, he would eat 12-15 lance fish in 1 sitting, his eating capacity is just insane. It was the lance fish that made him grow so quick.

Red - in fact I tried that, he's just too aggressive at feeding time. He really likes hikari pellets, he's eaten them since 10 mins out the bag. And recently I tried dropping in loads of hikari floating pellets, then dropping a handful of prawns. The aro immediately dives down to get the prawns, then goes back to scoop up the rest of the pellets. I've resorted to just feeding more than I should really, just dumping in loads of prawns a few throws at a time, so the aro can't nail all of them in 1 shot :D Most of the fish at least manage to get a piece or 2, the only problem is my smaller bichir, he's very slow off the mark. Takes him 2 minutes to sniff out a piece of prawn.

When i had my Polypterus he was very shy and they rarely venture out during the day there eye sight is bad and i used to have to feed him by hand i had 4 very large clown loach with him and they used to rip the food off of him. my one was living on mussels and cockles. I can see the small one getting a kick in with no cover see how it goes but you might need to put a flower pot in there to give him some cover.

I was thinking the same thing.. as Stotty.....even some plastic plants or something where the Arrow will think twice about diving down there where these odd things are..and also he does not know what is hiding inside those flower pots, that is probably it ..he sees everything to clear and scopes it out in a second..he is top dog .. you have to put something in there that makes him a little leary of the bottom..something safe of course..and somewhere where the others can hide..I looked at his pictures again and he is mighty handsome and so full of color.. just a pretty Boy. Or I should say He is definitly "The MAN" haha..
