Very often the process of losing one and one growing in will result in a bent tooth coming in or falling out. I have had armatus and tat to the point where neither could close their mouths as a result of this. I was concerned at first because I still don't understand how they don't stab out their own eyes in this condition. But every time it always seems to be an exact science. All of them have blown at least 3 sets of teeth since I got them.

For him to be that red the water must have been in good condition at your lfs. None of mine were that red when I brought them home until I had them for a month or two. You should call them and ask them to give you a list of their water param so you can match them closely. Most people say they don't do well with salt added.........mine got even redder after I started using it in their tank. There is alot of talk about how they change after a certain length. I have found this to be 100% truth. You have to keep a good eye on him at that point. They will do better with 2 or 3 more together. I do keep all my fish on live quarantined food. Make sure you get yourself a powerhead or if you have a mag pump plumb it to create a strong directional current. I would keep the temp cranked 85 degrees. Keep the water highly oxygenated, and make sure it is atomized as finely as possable. Good luck, nice pick-up.

Great info..thanks. There is a strong powerhead in the QT tank. Temp is about 82, I'll crank it a few more degrees. I am using an air tube on the powerhead, so the water is staying pretty oxygenated. I should have tested the water that he came home in, but I forgot to. An employee from that LFS is a member here, so I will probably pm him to try to get the params. I am going to try to get him off live asap after he is in the display tank and settled in. That was the only one the LFS had. I would have gotten more if they had them (although my wife would have killed me). I will be on the lookout for more. I have heard that they will school with other characins? I don't know if this is true or not (yet), but there is a small school of red hooks in the tank he will be going into. Hopefully they will help him feel a little more secure. Thanks again for your time.

WOW! Nice color. I'm not very much familiar with this fish. Is this a saber tooth?
Yes, but i'm not too sure which one. They are very hard to come by here, and this is the first one i've seen in person. Judging from pics, though, I think it is a tat. He is doing well. Thanks for the coments, everyone. I'll get some updated pics soon.
