I replaced the 2 incandescent bulbs that came wiht my cheapo 10gal kit wtih $5/e flourescent bulbs from wally world. 2 w/gal, no extra heat (why I replaced the originals), haven't tried natives but java fern and java moss both do fantastic.
What I'd like to do when I build a big native tank is have water lettuce - it just about ruined my mom's 5 acre pond (had it poisoned out) but it is good looking and does a great job cleaning the water
