It very well could be female and that's all there is to it. However, I just wanted to suggest this as I learned the hard way. My plecos' odontals pretty much fell out and were gone in comparison to his previous glory. I started feeding krill instead of shelled shrimp, and bam! those suckers started coming back. From them on I started feeding shell on shrimp. Big difference, and I'm sure he was healthier overall for it.
