A few questions

I want to get an RO unit anyway because if i don't go SW i want to keep FW inverts and i don't think my LFS sells RO water.

if LFS doesn't sell RO water then you local grocery store will, and it's usually cheaper anyway if you get it from the machine outside of the store, here its between $.15 and .35/ gallon for RO water from the machine.

those books i mentioned will answer every one of your questions and help you do this right from the start...

OK Nic i'll look into them. Danyal do you mean that they sell it bottled because that would be inconvenient to go to the store every time you do a water change.

its more conveinet to get your own unit and have water when ever you need it. Have fun doing water changes on a 55+ gallon tank going to the store every time you need it.

Yeah but do you just plug the thing in and it starts or do you have to do a whole plumbing job?

most come with realy good instructions explaining the process. They have a self taping saddle valve. It helps to know your cold water line water pressure so you can plan for maximum efficiency. If the pressure is lower the 65 psi, then i suggest getting a small RO unit pump. This pump increases the pressure so you get more water production with the least amount of waste water as possible. There not that difficult. You can really get into it with float valves that automaticaly shut of the unit when the water in the storage bin reaches a certain level.

So i do have to get a plumbing job done? Cause i don't think i can.

are you in an appartment. If your in an appartment then it may not be worth it until you get into a place a bit more permanent. RO units are easy to instal but some draw backs can occur when removing them.

bottled and those dispensing machine where you walk up with a gallon milk jug or 5g jug and put a quater into the machine. it's really not inconvenient at all, i just throw a couple of clean milk jugs into my trunk and whenever i'm driving by the store and think about it i'll pull some change out of the center console and a minute later i've got a couple gallons of RO/DI water. in the long run it'll be cheaper to get an RO/DI unit but i don't want the $200~300 initial cost for a good one and the trouble of setting it up when i don't have a spare water line.

he's got a 35g so if he want to do 10% weekly WC(with good filtration and stocking levels that's all that'd be needed) he only needs 4g of water, takes about 2min to fill up when theres only 2 machines open, although for larger tanks i'd just go to the expense of getting a pair of 5g jugs so you don't have to carry so many milk jugs.
