Beautiful Ryan.......... That psittacus is the truth. I agree with Sean though. You my friend, need some good ole crenicichla. A nice saxatilis type would look stunning next to the notatus.

Saxatilis type means literally nothing to me. :D I guess I need to find a good pike guide and start reading. I always assumed they were really aggressive and so I've avoided them.

My tank is looking a bit full right now, and will get worse as the parrot grows. I'll probably pull all the female severums eventually (except my Atabapo, who doesn't seem to act very much like a female) and that will give me some more space.

I know very little about pikes either but have read the saxatilis group stay smaller (around 9" although there are MANY species in the group) than many pike species and are generally less aggressive. My female was pretty tame when in with my severums before I sold her.

Your stock is beautiful, I enjoyed the video as well. :D. I had my eye on the tapajos variant from Jeff as well. In your experience how do they differ from normal rotkeils? Just a visual difference?

I've actually looked at pikes a few times. If I could find a more mellow, medium-growing pike, I'd gladly get one. The problem is that I know nothing about them, and I'm confused by the different groups and what it all means. I have ADD when it comes to fish research, apparently. I had thought of finding some small ones, like C. compressiceps, but I haven't seen them on any lists. Any suggestions?

i'd go with, as justin said, a sax sp. pike or a bellycrawler. i've got 2 bellycrawlers, one in each tank. they get only about 6", sax get a bit larger maxing around 10". i use to have a sveni which is a sax pike. bellycrawlers are generally more chill, i've heard stories of people with pretty aggressive sax pikes. pikes are just like any other cichlid, they're hit or miss with their behavior. i really want to get a lent pike  this site is a pretty good intro guide to pikes http://pikecichlid.com/photos.html just keep your eyes open ;)

Is there a good website that breaks the species up into their groups? So when someone says, "You should stick with the X group" I can reference it and find out which pikes belong to that group? Is that how it works?

I want one of those giant bright red pikes that I always see on Rapps' site, but I'm sure they're large-growing and aggressive because that's the type of luck I have.

I'm not sure what makes the Tapajos different. I got them a couple years ago when they were on his list because I thought they were supposed to look like this fish: http://amazon-exotic-import.de/Gallerie/Cichliden/Seiten/Heros sp. Tapajos.htm

Instead of a red nose/face, it developed a red shoulder much like a rotkeil. He does have really pretty deep blue lines all through his face. It stands out against the red. This particular fish took forever to mature. He didn't start showing color until about a year ago, and the blue has only developed in the past 6 months. I had another one that I gave away because it never developed any red and was much slower-growing.

i cant think of a site that does break them up by group, that site i posted does specify which sp. is in which group. the sax group all have the gold spangles down their sides, thats an easy way to distinguish them from others. once you start learning its a lot easier to tell groups by sight

That site does show the groups once you click the individual fish. That helped. Of course the ones I like are all 12 - 20". I want a lent, too, except I just did a quick search on MFK to read about them and found a ton of threads where they were murdering all their tankmates. I guess that's out of the question for now. I don't want anything to happen to my Heros...
