A fish that swims with piranha

Umm I do not think it is a good idea. I heard that an old piranha book said you could, but I have had no luck with it. Exos are usually expensive themselves so I would not risk it. I had three that I had no room for so I put them in my 125 with my pygos and they lasted all of 5 minutes!

Exos are very very fast fish, they can pretty much out swim anything in an aquarium, but the trick is, is that when you intoduce them to a tank with pirahnas the pirahnas know the layout of the tank and are used to the water in the tank. So to overcome this and increase survival of your exos get them aclimated to the water (the way I do it is a tank in tank, I have a small 5gal that I clamp to the main tank and put a powerhead with a hose into the 5 gal--> water from the main tank goes into the 5gal and overflows back into the main) I leave them there for a couple of days. Then I move everything around in the main tank so the P's dont know where they are, release the exos, and tada--P's and Exos swimming around.

i got one Astronotus Ocelatus with some RBP's and he is doing well, first days were nervous for him, me and my fish as well, but now everything is ok, and he is getting bigger :woot:

Exodon paradoxus dosen't this fish eat other fishes scales and fins ? i saw a documentry on the amazon and these fish did actually swim with piranhas they are only small and they feed on other fishes scales and fins.

Exodons are know for biting off scales and eyes. I've heard a lot of cases that you can keep exodons in the same tank as piranha, but if you put baby piranha with larger exos the exos will eat the baby piranha but since exos only get about 6 inches a hungry 12 inch adult red belly can very easily make a snack out of the exos.

nice info here guys..

i dont know here in the philippines if they have this bucktooth tetra around but what I did is i got a smaller tilapia with my almost 3 pcs 4 inch piranha in a 50 gal tank (3ftx18"x18").

the tilapia can swim faster than them. however its just one tilapia.

they have been in the same tank for at least a month now. maybe next week or this other day ill try to add more tilapia. maybe 3 pcs.

if they got eaten its ok with me. at least my piranha is not hungry.hehehe

it is never really a good idea to try to keep anything with piranha. u never know they could last a few weeks but when your piranha gets hungry they will eat other fish in the tank.

:iagree:

my rbp would not allow any tankmates for over 2 weeks at a time

I think if you add the tank mates when the piranha are young enough youll be ok. I have had 3 loachs, a pleco, 2 chinese algea eaters, 5 bala shark, and a scoal of guppy and mollys in my tank for over 4months. none of them have a bite taken from them. they all grew up togeather. will it work forever... prob not but we will see all the piranha are large enough to eat any of them for sure. they just dont even try. hell the loachs live in the same cave as them and the chinese algea eaters will chase them. and my guppys have recently started breeding, so they are not too stressed for sure. they all just respect each others space. balas stay in the middle, guppys and mollys at the top with the rest living in the bottem of the tank. ill keep you guys updated but i dont see any signs of it getting messy. in fact i think ill buy a few more bala shark this weekend.
