I recently bought a 180 gallon aquarium. Well about a week ago I was netting out my cichlids in my 75 gallon tank to put in my 180. I have 6 Rostratus's and they are just pups, about 3 inches long, not tiny but a LOOOONNNNGGG way from being adults thats for sure. Anyway when I would try to net them they did something that made me wonder if I was drunk even though I wasn't drinking. As I tried to net them, if they got away they would bury themselves completely under the gravel the next time I tried to get them. At first I started to wonder if I was ready for the funny farm but when all of them started to do this I realised that it must be normal behavior for them. I read an article on them the next day that stated that they do indeed bury themselves in the sand or gravel when threatened. I mean they were completely covered. I had to literally dig them out of the gravel with my hand. Pretty neat thing to see though.

Isn't it trippy?!
I've had some do that. Tramitichromis intermedius (sold as Oto. tetrastigma, no one knows which for sure, whatever), anyway, tried netting them out only to have them dive-bomb into the sand. I totally freaked out too. I looked to the other end of the tank first cause I thought hells no - maybe they just took off really fast but I couldn't find them. Then I stuck my hand in the sand and pulled out my male. HAHA it was soooo wierd. :grinyes:

lol I would prob. wonder where the heck my fish went that would drive me nuts!!

It was pretty funny Ash if it had happened in a lake I never would have gotten them.

It's really funny when you have a big 8in male that you try to catch and he does the same thing. But he is to big and he can't completly cover himself but he stays there cause he thinks you can't see him.
